A Clue to the Recovery of Authenticity: Military Sex Slave

This installation and film exhibition projected footage of five survivors of the Japanese military ‘comfort women’ system onto a 3 × 2 m cotton screen and placed the chair used during filming opposite the screen.

The five women sit and look into the camera without reenacting their experiences or delivering scripted lines. They were filmed so that viewers could meet each person’s gaze at the same eye level.

The chair on which each of the five women sat during filming was placed opposite the screen. Visitors sit in that chair and meet the person on screen at the same eye level.
