A Clue to the Recovery of Authenticity: Bussot, Raul

In 2013, Kim and Raul Bussot spent five days on a full-scale metal raft installed inside the gallery, revisiting the Bussot family’s five-day journey from Cuba toward the United States in 1993.

Raul’s father decided to leave Cuba with his family and two friends. They secretly assembled a raft in a mangrove forest, set out at night and drifted for days after meeting a storm. On the fifth day, the United States Coast Guard found and rescued them.

Kim built a raft matching the scale and form of the original and installed it in the gallery. Kim and Raul ate and slept on it for five days, facing that voyage again.
